Chapter 11

After Lance takes me back to the mansion, I see Patrick’s car already parked out front.

Great.

The three of them beat me back.

Just perfect.

Although I am curious as to Mason’s whereabouts, I decide to head straight to my room. But just before I reach the staircase, tiny whispers lead me further towards the living room.

I discreetly stand in the doorway and note Mason and his father on the other side of the room. They both share the same regal slim frame and towering height.

“So, we can pay the workers a dollar or less per day. The economy is so bad in Kenya the men will be grateful just for the opportunity to work. They won’t care about how hard they will have to work to get paid.”

What?!

Have I heard them right?

Before I have time to react they whip their heads in my direction.

I glare at them with anger in my eyes.

Mason gawks at me like a deer in the headlights.

“Lily, let me-” he begins to explain, but I walk away swiftly, bolting up to my room and locking the door.

“It’s not what you think, Lily.” I hear Mason say from the other side of the door. “You don’t understand…”

My fury reaches boiling point and I erupt like a volcano spewing out lava.

I swing the door open and bare my teeth at him.

“What don’t I understand, Mason? That you chose to reveal intimate details about us to our parents? Are you trying to win an award for the biggest asshole of the year? And I definitely don’t understand what illegal activity you and your father are planning to do in Kenya, but if you exploit any of its people I will fight you all the way. You will not get away with it. Now, leave me alone!”

I slam the door shut in his face and spin back around to face the room.

The look on Mason’s face when I blew up at him was one of pure shock, but I do not care. His reaction has no effect on me whatsoever.

When I hear him retreat back downstairs, I begin to pace the floor, trying to get a grip on the situation.

But nothing makes sense.

Nothing adds up.

What is Mason and Patrick’s interest in Kenya?

And why do I have this feeling it is going to hurt me… right down to my core?

An hour later, I find it too difficult to sleep. My sheets are in complete disarray and my eyes wide open as I gaze up at the ceiling.

My mind is abuzz with clutter.

Thoughts of Kenya, Mason and his plans for exploitation are swirling around in my head.

But anger is the real root cause of my insomnia.

Never in my life have I ever been so mad at someone. The argument with Mom was nothing compared to this. I wanted to do a lot more than just scream at him, but I restrained myself.

Mason should be glad I only slammed the door because the next thing that was coming was a hard slap on the face.
